While it doesn’t really matter what order you obtain these, here are the three that I consider absolutely necessary to all beginning e-entrepreneurs:
A short course on starting an e-business. Sometimes you can even find a free course on how to start an online business. Whatever course you choose should not promise to reveal some hidden secrets. It should just be a straightforward, honest overview of the major points to focus upon as you begin your Internet enterprise.
Google Account. Just go the Google home page. Below the search box, you will see a short list of links. Click the link titled “Business Solutions.” There you will find a list of more than a dozen resources that Google offers to business owners. I suggest that you simply take a few hours exploring in detail what they have to offer. Eventually you may find some that will never be useful for your business. However, many will be. In my various businesses, I use the following most frequently:
– Checkout (a payment processing system)
– Website Optimizer (conducts tests all of content on your website)–free
– Google Site Search (allows your users to locate content on your websites)–free
– AdWords (the advertising program for Google’s for their pay-per-click alternative)
— Analytics, which data for all of your major website traffic metrics–free
There are other Google services that I also use. I particularly enjoy the Google Reader (for RSS feeds) and Google Docs, which allow me to access my documents from any computer that I use–as long as I have Internet access. Your Google account is valid for all of these.
Perhaps the one thing that I use most often is a free list of Internet business resources. The document has hyperlinks that take me directly to a large list of free tools and to some of the most highly respected software for web businesses.
Make sure you use these three suggestions, and your business is sure to begin in a way that allows for future growth.
How to Build From a Mini-Site Into an Online Empire
If you are just beginning in online business, either as a new business or as an expansion of or supplement to your already existing business, the size and scope of the firts website you choose to build will be among your first decisions. A large site might become what is known as an authority site; that is certainly advantageous. However, a small site, often called a mini-site has its share of advantages, as well.

All of those reasons are valid. Actually, I have no idea what your spouse said or what the implied threat was for disobeying. However some of the other reasons are valid only if you do the necessary research before you begin. The third rationale is accurate, however, you must recognize that you will need to do some periodic updates on your pages. Reason number 4 is niche specific, so I’ll take your word for your belief that it is true in the case of the market in which you are competing. If we hold all other variables constant, the fifth reason is a slam-dunk–self-evidently true.
I have written elsewhere about the extreme importance of careful keyword research for a mini-site. If you go through that process properly, the first reason is true because you will be optimizing for just a few, closely related semantically, long-tail keywords. If any of those terms are unclear, I suggest that you read that article prior to continuing with this one.
That leaves the second reason pertaining to starting on a small scale and adding more mini-sites within the same general niche over a period of time. There is a particular way that I suggest you go about achieving that dream.
1. Keep that original list of keywords on your desktop–the list that you hired expert keyword researches to build or that you carefully built yourself.
2. You have already set up your first site for closely related keywords in that list that have long tails. At this point, examine the master list for another small set of closely related key phrases; they, too, should have long tails. Do the same competition analysis for these keywords that you conducted on the first set (as recommended in that previous article). If this set of keywords meet the same standards applied to those you used in the first site, then it’s time to begin mini-site number two.
3. Get links to this site through article marketing, directory listings and other external link building.
4. Once that site is on its way toward improved search engine rankings and increased traffic, repeat the process for site number 3…and so on.
Sooner than you think but not as quickly as you wish, you will have mastered your entire niche. Then it will be time to begin serious efforts to improve your conversion rate by testing as many variables within your site as you can identify. Only after you have maximized your traffic and conversion rate should you begin to consider launching an attack on the next niche.
This won’t all happen in the first month; nurturing a solid business takes time. Learn, so that when you act, you will be acting appropriately…oh, and be patient.

The fourth reason is niche specific, and I don’t know what niche you are in; you’re the expert on your niche, so I’ll take your word for it.
