Are you debating what the value of a social media compaign would be for your business? Has the controversy over social media campaigns left you undecided?

This article will give you some insight into this issue and provide some points to consider in deciding what is the best strategy for your business.

Social Media (SM) is a means of connecting with others, and it supports the human need for social interaction.  The common tools include Twitter, Facebook, and other SM sites and communities.

There are two sides of the dispute over the real benefits of SM to businesses:

Arguments for:
Businesses can no longer ignore SM. It has been experiencing an explosion in the number of people participating. Consequently, it is getting tougher to maintain a business online without participating in SM.

Arguments against:
The ROI (return on investment) on SM marketing is hard to measure, and SM marketing is very labor-intensive. Some people believe that a social media campaign is only about conversations, not conversions.

My position is that a successful SM campaign is dependent on the business and proper implementation.

Your social media campaign will depend on:

1.  Your objectives
2.  Your target audience
3.  Your assets

1.  What are your goals?  Why do you want to use a social media campaign?

You must have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish with your SM campaign, and you must be able to assess your results.

2.  Your audience?

You should know your target market and their needs before you implement a social media campaign. Then you can target your audience by determining which sites would be most related to your issue, business, company or topic.

3.  What resources do you have available?

You can set up an account for free on most SM sites.  However, you will need to invest time to respond to questions and posts; unless you hire a virtual assistant (VA).

In conclusion, a social media strategy can be a powerful, low cost, strategy to generate traffic to your site.  It should be incorporated into your marketing mix. However, success depends on whether your business niche is right for this marketing media and whether you execute the strategy properly.
